Salt Lake City, UT - Fan Reviews

Fan Review - By Brett

This is the first Def Leppard concert I've ever gone into a little bit bummed. Having seen the set lists for previous shows on the tour I was disappointed that it would essentially be the same show as the last tour (and for the most part the one before that). With the first drum loops of Undefeated and flashes of the band on the giant vertical video screens, all that went away. The live version of Undefeated was excellent and well received by the crowd. One thing I love about making the 5 hour trip to SLC for Def Leppard is the crowd is always into it, loud and rocking. Surprising, considering Salt Lake is extremely conservative.

The band moved straight into LGR and then Animal with the high def screens full of color and art work. As the last time they were here, the were firing on all cylinders. My seats were on Viv's side, and he was having a lot of fun with the boys on the side of the stage, giving the finger, trying to catch his guitar pics… just seemed to truly be enjoying the moment. After Foolin' came Love Bites (my least favorite live song… sorry Joe) with Vivian playing a great solo at the end.

Next up was Sav's solo and then Rock On, and then the long version of Rocket. It was great to hear the exchanges between Phil and Viv and interesting to watch the crowd turn from one side to the other as each played their parts of the "battle". It was like watching a crowd at a tennis match… Look right, look left, look right, look left. The band then slowed it down for the acoustic set. A guy near the ramp had a hand written sign "Wasted" held up and Phil and Viv gave him an acoustic clip. Joe couldn't pass up the chance to play "Crazy Horses" and my guess most in the crowd didn't know what it was until he said, "So it's the Osmonds, so what?"

The normal sing along set of TSB and BOTH were played with the band switching back to electric for Switch 625. It's one of the only instrumental songs I've seen a band do that doesn't have people making a quick beer run during. The guitar work was fantastic and Rick was pounding away, with a short solo at the end. Time to pick up the pace again.

The band finished with the hits package of Hysteria, Armageddon It, Photograph, and Sugar. All the while the place was jumping. It was one of the loudest outdoor crowds I've ever experienced (except for maybe the same venue for Sparkle Lounge).

Before launching into ROA, Joe told everyone to look all the way to the back. The house was packed and going crazy which according to Joe, "This is why we keep coming back".

I will never be apprehensive about a Leppard show again. They have proved that even when you know what's coming, you're going to get a great show full of great songs, played by a band that obviously loves what they do, do it well, and appreciate the people who pay to see them.
