Arena rock overtakes amphitheater By Jeff Maisey
If Saturday night's Def Leppard, Styx and Foreigner triple-bill at the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater was a boxing match, it would have to be scored a draw.
All three heavyweight arena rock bands, whose pop-rock chartings days may be over, threw their best punches to the delight of nearly 14,000 enthusiastic fans.
Considering that the bands had each just performed last year in Virginia Beach, the strong turnout was impressive. In 2006, Def Leppard headlined with Journey as the opening act, drawing 17,000 fans. The Styx and Foreigner double-bill pulled in 8,500 last September.
Though Def Leppard was considered the headlining act on Saturday, Styx and Foreigner were clearly more energetic.
Def Leppard closed the evening with a song selection that nearly matched last year's. From their most current album, "Yeah," a collection of cover tunes, they again chose to perform "Rock On" in exactly the same arrangement.
From the Def Leppard catalog: "Photograph," "Rocket," "Animal," "Love Bites," "Foolin'," and "Hysteria."
A crowd-pleasing night of arena rock.
