Def Leppard, Journey recall another era By David Jacobs

With this summer marking MTV's 25th birthday, the timing seemed perfect for a supergroup concert doubleheader Sunday night in downtown Reno.

A near sellout crowd estimated at 6,850 jammed the Reno Events Center to hear Journey and Def Leppard. Some fans even wore Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC or Judas Priest T-shirts to remember the era.

Center security staffers tried their best to keep the aisles clear. But by the time Def Leppard wrapped up the night with "Pour Some Sugar On Me," the first 10 rows had turned into a giant dance floor.

"There will be a next time," singer Joe Elliott promised the crowd as the concert ended.

Earlier, Elliott told the audience he couldn't remember the last time Def Leppard had performed in Reno. "We apologize for not being here for so long," he said.

The two bands played all of their hits during a show of more than three hours, including a 25-minute break between acts.

With 57-year-old Steve Perry no longer with Journey, its lead singer is Jeff Scott Soto, an energetic and youthful-looking 40-year-old.

But for the band's ballads, he left the stage and let drummer Deen Castronovo sing "Who's Crying Now," and "Open Arms." And as Castronovo sang "Faithfully," clips from the song's 1980s music video ran simultaneously, highlighting Journey members in their early touring days.

The Reno concert drew fans from throughout the region.

"It's two heavyweights from the day," said Ryan Vergilio, 37, of Reno, who won concert tickets from a local radio station. "It's back to the 1980s -- the day. I think it's a great bill."

Wendy Mis-Olsen, 42, traveled from Orem, Utah, for the show.

"I grew up with these bands -- both of them," she said. "The first time I had anything to drink was to Journey in junior high school. And I got caught."
