Bradford, England - Media Reviews

By Russ P

AFTER too long a gap of 23 years Sheffield rockers Def Leppard made a much welcomed return to Bradford appearing at the Alhambra Theatre. The band was to appear at St George's Hall but the gig was moved to the Alhambra due to St George's Hall having to temporarily close until the new new year.

Def Leppard took to the stage greeted by thunderous applause and cheers from the rock T-shirt-clad audience.

The band played a varied range of their hits spanning more than 20 years including well known songs such as Animal and Pour Some Sugar On Me as Joe Elliott spun around the stage with his microphone.

They even gave drummer Rick Allen a little solo spot which seemed to touch everyone and I felt kind of sorry for the guy.

Further into the night Def Leppard played a few tracks off their latest album release called X and they also an acoustic spot during which lead singer Joe Elliott also played guitar. The band then left the stage to cries of "more" they then returned for the encore and played at least three more songs from their 23-year history before exiting the stage for the final time.

Let's hope they don't leave it another 23 years before playing in Bradford again!

Ricky Warwick - It must be a tough job having to play support to Sheffield rockers Def Leppard, especially if you only have an acoustic guitar and no band to back you, but Ricky braved it and is still alive and well to tell the tale. The gig was originally supposed to be at St George's Hall but had to be moved to The Alhambra due to cracks in the ceiling. The Alhambra isn't particularly a band venue and is more of a venue for musicals and pantomimes but to me it seemed to be suitable for an audience of middle aged rockers and rock they did.

It's a shame that a lot of the audience were still in the bar while the former Almighty frontman belted out songs on his acoustic guitar but I suppose they just wanted to get worked up for Def Leppard.

Ricky Warwick, sporting a sleeveless shirt which showed off the many tattoos which covered his arms, performed songs from his newly released Tattoos And Alibis CD. He had a guest guitarist who helped out on a couple of songs but I think Ricky would sound a lot better if he decided to get a full band together.

His songs sounded slightly folk orientated although on his album they sound more rock which is why a full band is something Ricky should seriously consider.
