Def Leppard @ The Palace Of Auburn Hills By Detroit Free Press
Michael Dukakis and George Bush may dream about such scenes, walking through the middle of a packed arena, shaking hands to building-shaking waves of applause.
That sort of dream is reality for British hard rock band Def Leppard, who played sold-out shows Saturday and Sunday at the Palace.
If it were up to the almost 20,000 teens who set house attendance records each night, the quintet's members could well have been elected president, monarch or at least favourite group of the moment.
The group's two-hour, 14-song show was reminder of how deep its popularity cuts.
All segments of the teen audience, from hardcore head-bangers to preppie popsters, were represented, and Def Leppard catered to them all with a blend of heavy metal energy and slick, radio-friendly hooks.
The 200th and 201st shows of Leppard's tour were also visual show pieces with the group performing in-the-round and using laser images to spice its performance.
But even without the gimmicks, the group could have won the crowd over with its energetic showmanship.
