Def Leppard @ Blosson Music Center By Akron Beacon-Journal

Harmless must be hip if Def Leppard is the hippest band around.

And judging by the sellout crowd of more than 18,000 at Blossom Music Center on Wednesday night, the band of Brits is undoubtedly the hippest.

At least among kids, like those on the lawn, who didn't know enough to get out of the rain.

Despite the hyped aura of rebelliousness surrounding the group of second generation metal heads, Leppard presented a clean, slick and surprisingly entertaining set of relatively melodic material.

The music was accompanied by the band's endearingly pleasant stage presence and friendly banter.

Singer Joe Elliott, after all, couldn't pretend to be much tougher, dressed in a Batman T-shirt.

But the band's niceties didn't manifest themselves in diluted material.
