Baltimore, MD - Media Reviews

Def Leppard @ Baltimore Arena By Baltimore Sun

Allen's playing was one of the evening's highlights.

Perched on a revolving riser at the summit of the group's in-the-round stage, he was clearly visible throughout the performance.

Though his appearance was decidedly casual - bare feet, shorts and a T-shirt - his playing was anything but, lending a sure-footed authority to 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' and displaying an astonishing dexterity through 'Let It Go'.

Instrumental showmanship was very much the order of the evening, though.

In addition to the expected solo-showcases for guitarists Steve Clark and Phil Collen, there were some slyly astonishing ensemble performances that showed how much the group has improved during its absence.

'Bringin' On The Heartbreak' was especially stunning, opening quietly, with Clark's pastoral 12-string strumming offset by Collen's flamenco flourishes.

It seemed an almost complete rethink, until the lights went out and the band kicked in with its signature sledgehammer attack.

Although things got off to a slow start, after a passably passionate 'Women', the band lapsed into somnolence, performing the song 'Hysteria' almost as if sleepwalking.

Once the Leppards found their pace, they were indefatigable.
