Kansas City, MO - Media Reviews

Billy Squier/Def Leppard @ Municipal Auditorium By Kansas City Star

I'd have to give Def Leppard the edge because of Joe Elliott's frenzied vocals, combined with the double-barrel guitar attack by Steve Clark and Phil Collen, which made headliner Billy Squier work that much harder.

Standouts for Def Leppard included the current single 'Photograph', as well as 'Rock Of Ages', 'Billy's Got A Gun' and 'High 'N 'Dry (Saturday Night)' and 'Bringin' On The Heartbreak' both from the group's previous album 'High 'n' Dry'.

The only disappointments were a couple of lame guitar solos by Mr. Clark and Mr. Collen, both of whom worked well together but tended to sound like wounded ambulances when noodling around individually.

Their encore was a rave-up version of Creedence Clearwater Revivial's 'Travellin' Band' which brought a surprisingly enthusiastic response from the crowd.

Surprising because most of the 10,000 or so people in the sell-out audience probably were about 3 years old when the song was released in 1970.
