Detroit/Clarkston, MI - Media Reviews

Ozzy Osbourne/Def Leppard @ Pine Knob By Michigan City Journal

While the legendary Osbourne and his band headlined the show, Def Leppard made it worthwhile for the early-comers with some pulsating, loud rock and roll.

This quintet is a story in itself because with an average age of 19, it was a leader of the heavy metal renaissance in England last year.

And even though these brash and unabashed rockers do crank it up excessively, they show real promise as a live act.

Joe Elliott is both the lead singer and the focal point of the group but the stage sound monitor seemed to hamper his needed mobility.

When he did march downstage, he knew how to work his predominantly high school and even junior high-aged audience.

Other than that instance, Def Leppard had no real stage presence because basically the group is still a bunch of kids.

The band wandered around between its wall of amplifiers and the sound monitors like caged tigers waiting to be unleashed.

Def Leppard played some songs from both its albums, 'On Through The Night' and its latest, 'High 'n' Dry', featuring the scorching 'Let It Go'.

While the song probably the most intelligible, the group sang off-key during the refrain and the tune virtually collapsed under the tremendous volume.

Def Leppard ended it's set with 'Wasted' a loud and boisterous rocker which the entire overflow crowd here seemed to identify with.

Given a few more years of maturity and live performances, Def Leppard should develop into a formidable talent.
