Pat Travers/Def Leppard @ Santa Monica Civic By Variety Magazine
"Def Leppard drew a respectable response from the near-capacity house with it's own version of hard-driving but melodic rock. This group has all the requisite elements well in hand for this type of approach, including a 'long live rock' anthem or two which suggest the early potency of Foghat...
Rick Savage is an aggressive bassist who provides solid underpinning for the twin guitar assault of Steve Clark and Pete Willis."

Pat Travers/Def Leppard @ Santa Monica Civic By Los Angeles Times
Second-billed Def Leppard (that's the way it's spelled) is a new band that's even more cliche-ridden than the headliner, yet somehow more enjoyable.
The English quintet goes through the heavy metal motions like a bunch of hair flailing wind-up dolls.
But with a good deal of showmanship and talent.
What it lacks, though, is brilliance.
At the core of its common but powerful sound are some very smartly patterned rhythms, along with an above-average two-guitar attack and Joe Elliott's serviceable but never thrilling vocals.
Still, Leppard is satisfying enough in a generally disappointing genre (and the first such English band to be so in quite a while)to be a good bet for success.
